Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the Swachh Bharat Mission on October 2, 2014. The mission’s goal is to provide universal sanitation coverage and promote sanitary sanitation practices. The “Clean India Mission” is another name for the programme. It’s a national initiative to clean up the streets, highways, cities, and rural areas. The mission’s goal is to make India “open-defecation-free” (ODF) by October 2nd, 2019.
Background
With Mahatma Gandhi’s efforts, India began its march toward cleanliness. Our nation’s Father launched a large cleanliness and sanitation awareness campaign, inspiring many more leaders to follow in his footsteps. On the 10th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, a nationwide drive to realise the dream of a Clean India.

Swachch Bharat Abhiyan- Gramin
It focuses on expanding the scope of rural sanitation coverage and eradicating open defecation. The programme also focuses on improving solid and liquid waste management.

Within its scope, the project tries to achieve three goals. First and foremost, it aims to reduce the number of households who practise open defecation. The conversion of pit latrines to sanitary latrines is the second goal. The Clean India Mission’s third goal is to prevent the building of any additional unclean toilets.
Swachhata Abhiyan has evolved over time
In 1954, a sanitation programme was established. This was the country’s first such programme. It was followed in 1986 by the establishment of the Central Rural Sanitation Programme.
