As the title suggests, the Renault Kwid is an entry-level offering from Renault India. It is a crossover hatchback that takes on the like of the Maruti Suzuki Alto, Alto K10, Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, Tata Punch, Citroen C3, and the Hyundai Santro. It is also worth mentioning that some higher variants of the Kwid can get you fewer variants of the Tata Punch.
Besides that, the international-spec Kwid also offers an electric iteration, which is called the Renault City K-ZE. But, in India, the French car manufacturer only offers a petrol version. However, the carmaker hasn’t announced an electric iteration of the Kwid for the Indian market.
Speaking of the domestic market, there are only three Renault cars available that include a hatchback, a sub-four-metre MPV, and a mini crossover SUV.
However, if you are planning to buy a hatchback under Rs 8 lakh, you should consider the Renault Kwid as well. But below are a few key highlights that you need to keep in mind.
Specifications
This vehicle has a starting ex-showroom price of Rs 4.70 lakh, so a car with this price tag usually offers only one engine option, and that too below the 1.2-litre engine capacity. However, under the hood of the Renault Kwid, you get a 999cc, three-cylinder engine that is tuned to churn out 53.26 bhp at 5600 rpm and 72 Nm of peak torque at 4250 rpm. It sends power to its front wheels via a standard five-speed manual transmission and an optional five-speed AMT unit.
It stores its fuel in its 28-litre fuel tank.
With this engine and transmission combination, the mileage figures of the manual and automatic versions are 22.02 km/l and 22.0 km/l, respectively. Please note that these are ARAI-claimed mileage figures. You can expect the real-world mileage to range between 18 km/l and 21 km/l. Furthermore, the 2023 manufactured Renault Kwid has an updated BS6 engine, which is known as the BS6 Ph-2 compliance.
Besides the engine output, the Renault Kwid has a Mcpherson Strut with Lower Transverse Link at the front and a Twist Beam Suspension with Coil Spring at the front. The carmaker designed this vehicle by keeping the Indian roads in mind. Having said that, it can easily absorb the bumps from potholes. This vehicle shouldn’t let the passengers jostle much, as it is pretty stable on bad patches. However, it is always recommended to take a test drive of a vehicle as personal opinions can vary from person to person. Moreover, the suspension setup on this vehicle works in tandem with a standard disc-drum setup.
Dimensions
This locally produced hatchback has a length of 3731mm, a width of 1579mm, and a height of 1474mm, and it sits on a wheelbase of 2422mm. Further, the Renault Kwid runs on 14-inch steel wheels, which have a tyre profile of 165/70 R14. By standing on these tyres, the Renaut Kwid’s ground clearance stands at 184mm. As mentioned earlier, the ride height is suitable for Indian roads. You can easily sail through bad patches without any fear.
Moreover, with these dimensions, the interior, especially the rear seat may feel a little crampy. In addition, the hatchbacks from this segment are usually restricted to four passengers only. The fifth person in the middle rear seat may struggle to sit during long journeys.
Speaking of long journeys, the Renault Kwid has a boot space of 279 litres. That’s a pretty respectable size to accommodate small things.
Features
Once you step inside the car, you will be welcome with a monotone colour scheme, but in black colour. The first thing you may notice is the integrated 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, which supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This system also supports a voice command feature, and a GPS navigating system, alongside Bluetooth, Auxiliary, and USB compatibilities.
Whereas, on the driver’s side, the top model of the Renault Kwid boasts a fully digital instrument cluster which shows relevant readings, such as the average fuel consumption, average speed, distance to empty, clock, low fuel level warning, and gear indicator, to name a few.
Further, it has rotary dials for a single-zone HVAC with common fan speed control. In addition, it offers a manually adjustable anti-glare IRVM. And for added convenience, you get two 12V charging sockets. All four windows are electrically controlled, alongside electrically adjustable ORVMs.
On the safety front, the French car manufacturer has equipped this hatchback with ABS with EBD, ESP, hill-hold control, and traction control. Like other new-age vehicles, this hatchback also has an engine immobilizer, remote central locking, speed-sensing door lock, and child safety lock. Further, the Renault Kwid is equipped with dual airbags, seat belt warnings and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
